"Anyone who vehemently and hotly denies any new ideas that threaten the status quo!

Basically there are two kinds of 'Debunkers': 'Benign' & 'Rabid'!

Benign Debunkers:

Benign Debunkers are those persons who firmly believe their 'ideals' and 'persona' to be severely threatened by any significant change!

True, most of us don't like 'change' because it most often means either a change in our physical circumstances, (technological developments, etc.), or our mental outlook towards reality. However, most of us prefer to adjust to these changes which are almost inevitable in our modern times, and we just 'get on with it'!

The Benign Debunker, however, clings to his or her 'Teddy Bear Belief Systems', (See our first article in SCIENCE in FOCUS - Teddy Bear Belief Systems), much like a child clings to his or her favorite 'Teddy Bear'!

They really mean no harm but only harbor the mistaken belief that these 'changes' somehow, drastically change their 'basic principles', which of course, is a false assumption. Only they themselves can do that or should even be allowed to!

Rabid Debunkers:

Rabid Debunkers, on the other hand, have subjective, ulterior motives in mind!

Their purpose is to deliberately mislead others by the use of disinformation, defamation, ridicule, and by the use of 'Grey & Black' propaganda, which are subtle or outright 'lies'! This is usually done for ulterior political, financial, and/or military purposes but may also be done for possible personal profit motives and/or self aggrandizement.

Rabid Debunkers are utterly ruthless and unethical and will go to any extreme to advance their agendas!

Rabid Debunkers use such terms as; 'The Public Good'; 'The Good of Society'; 'Social Order'; 'National Security'; and the like! As one can see, these terms are deliberately 'vague' and can mean anything their authors want them to mean!

So how does one seperate the 'Wheat' from the 'Chaff', (Truth from Pseudo-Truth)?

Stephen Hawking, Ph.D., Oxford University, London, UK, gives us one general rule!

"Repudiation by Denigration"; That way, one does not need to debate the 'FACTS'!

Stanton T. Friedman, MSc, a noted aerospace engineer and UFO researcher, in his 1996 publication, 'Top Secret/Majic', sums it up precisely in his 'Debunkers Ten Commandments' which are as follows:

THE DEBUNKERS TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. What the public doesn't know won't hurt them, so don't tell them!

2. Don't confuse me with the facts! My mind is made up!!!

3. Absence of evidence is evidence of absence!

4. Select only data the matches your conclusions!

5. If at first, a scenario supporting your theory crumbles under the weight of facts, try, try again to prop up your theory with another, then another, then another!

6. Hearsay testimony is acceptable if it supports your theory, but unacceptable if it supports the other guy!

7. It is important to be 'RIGHT!', not 'TRUTHFUL'!

8. Loudly proclaim the truth of your testimony, especially if nobody else can check it!.

9. Pepper your publications with references to as many personal, (i.e., unverifiable) interviews as possible!

10. Don't mention references that don't support your theory! The public won't know the difference!

Here are some examples! (One may notice that Astronomers, NOT Astrophysicists, seem to comprise many of the Debunkers - more on that later)!

A noted astronomer presented some basic arguments against UFOs and Extraterrestrials citing some basic scientific and physics principles which most of us learned either in the 8th Grade or in High School. However, he failed to mention any of the more contradictory advances in Theoretical Physics and Quantum Mechanics!

(Commandment No. 1 - What the public doesn't know won't hurt them, so don't tell them!) (Commandment No. 10 - Don't mention references that don't support your theory! The public won't know the difference!)

Now that the innocent reader is assured of his 'expert credentials', he proceeds with the following which is outright 'disinformation'!

"Air Traffic Controllers report UFOs because they cannot tell the difference between 'moving objects' and 'weather returns'!!!".

REALLY???

If that were the case, that particular Air Traffic Controller would NEVER have graduated from Air Traffic Controllers School!!! This should be quite obvious to any of our intelligent readers!

One other little known fact: Out of every 100 students who enter Air Traffic Controllers School, only about 20 graduate! (And some of these 'fall by the wayside' on their first assignment due to the extreme stress involved!).

(Reference: VHS Video, M996A, 'Air Traffic Control' -"Operation Raincheck") This is a history of the Air Traffic Control System including its training requirements and syllabus. It is now 'out of print'! Wonder why??? - The battle in Congress over 'User Fees' ???

Example No. 2 - Public Relations Firms, (The 'Spin Masters' of America!):

Some of our most notorious Debunkers are Public Relations Firms, many with names most of us have never heard of! One of their most frequently used tools is 'Black Propaganda', (outright lies)!

Here is a typical example:

A Pharmaceutical Firm develops a new product to inhibit chronic 'Tooth Aches'! Now, how do they market this new product to their maximum advantage and at the same time, 'best' their competitors? Use an Ad Agency, (Public Relations Firm), of course! They are 'experts' at putting the right 'Spin' on a new product or a piece of 'Taylor made' news!

Here is the 'Spin' for this new product in brief:

"Amazing break through for 'Tooth Ache Suffers!". "XYZ Pharmaceuticals has developed, (product name), an amazing new cure for chronic tooth aches of which one application will quiet that nagging tooth ache for up to 30 DAYS!"

REALLY???

Just ask your local pharmacist and, if he or she is honest, he or she will most likely tell you that 'NONE' of these tooth ache remedies will last any longer than 72 hours at most!!!

In addition to that, one may consult any of the 'Home Remedy' publications sponsored by the Mayo Health Clinic or AARP and discover that one need only make up a thick syrup by boiling common, everyday cloves that can be purchased cheaply at any grocery store and apply that to your tooth ache and that will also last for up to 72 hours! So much for the Pharmaceutical Firm's 'Magic New Potion'!!!

These are just two examples of 'Debunker Tactics'! - There are a lot more!

"The principal causes of air pollution in Los Angeles are 'Smoking' and Bar-B-Q- ing Hamburgers in your back yard!" - That's a good 'stretch' if there ever was one!

Here are a few more real scientific facts the Debunkers will most likely omit:

Quantum Mechanics 'x' & 'y' Mysteries:

In Quantum Physical experiments, 'y' mysteries are things that 'happen' even though they are not supposed to happen, but they happen anyway and can be proven by future advanced experiments in the lab!

Quantum 'x' mysteries, (like the 'x' Files), are things that aren't suppose to happen but they do happen but they cannot be proven in existing physics labs under existing technologies. Nobody knows why they happen - they just 'HAPPEN'!!!

"No being could possibly withstand the extreme gravity forces which would be generated by the erratic movements displayed by 'so called' UFOs'!!!

The reality is: If a Force Field or Counter - Gravity Propulsion System were used, the occupants would feel no movement at all!!!

A spacecraft traveling at 90% Light Speed to a star system 6 light years away would reach such a star system in approximately 3 days as time measured aboard that space craft and its occupants would only have aged 3 days! (One Light Year as seen from an observer on earth would equal only 12 hours to those aboard this space craft!).

An observer on Earth sees event 'A' happening before event 'B'! An observer located at a different point in space-time would see event 'B' happening before event 'A'!!!

Other scientific developments Debunkers will often fail to mention are:

Space Travel through 'Worm Holes', (Hyperspace); Scientific advances in: 'Cloaking'; 'Teleportation'; 'Space Warp Technologies, (Taking the 'Quantum Leap)'; Einstein's 'Spooky Action At A Distance'; and much more which will be discussed in greater detail in future articles in 'SCIENCE in FOCUS'!
